Fall Back: From the Journal

From the end of the hall… When I was a kid, I understood that the clock moved ahead in the springtime and back in the late fall. The mechanics were simple…and I would help make sure all of the clocks in the house were set correctly.. What mystified me was where the hour went or where it came from. So far as I understood, there were still only twenty four hours in a day…so what was it with ‘adding one’ or ‘removing one’ ? The arbitrary demarcation of time that has become standardized over the long haul seemed a bit more fixed when I was younger. Time is a bit more flowy now…A Monday rolls around and suddenly, Saturday is on the horizon…And lots happened in between, there’s no question…Now and then I simply think uff, thank goodness for a calendar and the healthy use of Reminders. Maybe it’s to do with all of the other people that are a part of the week now…time is not mine alone to use.

So, here I am at the end of the first day of ‘the extra hour’ cycle and wondering…how can I account for that bonus? How does my day reflect that gift and the creation that fills it?

I exchanged sports sympathies with a ninety year old who was hoping the Jays would pull it out; made scones; proclaimed the second reading at liturgy; Resolved various household gremlin issues brought to my attention by others (Those events under the heading of “Why is X Y Z happening??” and having no idea, but managing to fix the result of an unknown provocation); replaced a smoke detector; consoled a friend; texted another; complimented a woman on her cane bling while in line at the grocery store; answered Centre emails; took a walk in the sun-rich cool, loving the colours and textures; laughed with strangers; listened to Evensong with a cat on my lap; filled up the car; danced in the car; took out the garbage; did laundry.

In short, I hope I honoured the hour…the hours…. and I am grateful to feel like gratitude is the clasp on this circle of time as the moon takes on the vigil watch.
