From the Journal: On SuperPowers and Not Knowing

From the Journal

7:26 AM At the end of the hallway, waiting to go to the market. Won’t have a chance to write while there this morning, so wanted to sit with you now…and I am so grateful, for that–and for the true Nova Scotia summer day that is blooming–breeze, sun, open skies, and great numbers of gulls out riding on the air currents. I can’t help but imagine how freeing that would be… Flying would definitely make it onto the ‘If you had a super-power…’ list, but only if there was a kind of free-floating list of say, three or four.

Invisibility would definitely be there. So too ‘apperating’–thinking yourself someplace and ‘Foof!’ there you are. I’d also like to be able to see inside things. Not x-ray vision–that feels like something else. This would be actually being inside, say, a flower stem…to see the structure, to touch the parts. Or, it would be a way of engaging ‘microscope-vision.’ Wouldn’t want it on at all times, but to have the option? That would be amazing. Sort of a microscope-telescope thing. OH-I’d be looking at all sorts of things! To sit and stare would take on a whole new dimension. Rocks, a bird in flight, dahlias, favourite trees in the Public Gardens, bread, a mountain, the short snippet of fibre-op cable that is a filament of cat hair. And then the telescope part…constellations! Planets! As to the why…

—1:05 PM, in between loads of laundry and cleaning rooms in anticipation of the next round of guests…Going back to the why…If I am honest, it has to do with knowing more of you in greater, deeper dimension. Entering more fully, with senses attentive–into the utter wonder and mystery of creation, of the forces and principles holding the All in check…the organic stuff, the stories of origin and Being…That is the story you breathe into the Universe, that you speak as Word across the waters, the heavens, the hills and plains; The great Deeps, the Wilds and Flats, the Heights, and the most Interior. To somehow draw closer to that?? Augh! Yes, please…

Also, on my way home from the Gardens, I watched a Northern Flicker have its lunch today. I’d never seen one up close like that, if at all. So I could look it up later on, I took notes about what it looked like as he went to town feasting on bugs in the grass.

~Brown body; white pants with black polka dots all over them; red split cap on head–round toward the crown–drawing to a point toward the back; black shield on rump and chest; yellow under wings; beak like a corvid, pants make me think woodpecker? Smaller than a Jay, bigger than a cedar waxwing…~

Re-reading this morning’s musing on super-powers and the description of the bird, I find myself laughing at the idea of dreaming about being able to dial between telescopic and microscopic. You’ve already given that gift to humanity, though obviously not in the way I’d fancifully conceived it. It’s called paying attention. Noticing. Staying still. Allowing oneself to revel and spending time in admiration and curiosity.

You will Never cease to astound me, O God. I am grateful for not knowing –it is such a doorway into the embrace of Mystery and wonder of revelation.
