I wrote this for myself this morning…thought I’d share it here.
On the Day After
Cynicism is such a tempting dance partner;
knows how to dress to please, how
to shiver your knees, how to
whisper the worst
with a peppermint tease.
If I shift my gaze,
where else will it land, who else
might catch my eye, take my hand
and spin me to heaven, holding
the small of my back, fingers fanned?
The flashy are foremost, bling catching the light.
they know the words but won’t last
the night; singing in circles, deaf to the plight
of the others that dance
just out of their sight.
Hope in her velvet, Justice in pearls,
Mercy in lace, Dignity in swirls.
Those, those are my people, my partners,
my graces, dancing in shadows
with sun on their faces.
Making our moves, and swinging
our hips, we will take over the floor,
like oceans and ships and sail
onward inviting as many to board
as recognize their need for Love at the core.
